There are many needs / uses of Dynamic DNS in todays Internet world. Some common uses and some not so common. Hopefully today I can shed some light on some uses of Dynamic DNS to perhaps open up new ideas for some users.
1) Remote Access - This is likely the biggest need for Dynamic DNS. Companies allowing employees to work from home and thus using some sort of Remote Control ( like VNC or Remote Desktop) program to connect from their Home computer to their Work computer.
2) Internet Servers - Pretty basic here. Using a Dynamic DNS program to resolve a domain name to locally host your own webserver, mailserver, etc.
Those two are the core reasons why customers I've dealt with use a Dynamic DNS Client. However there are some other ways to use Dynamic DNS that some people might not think about.
1) Using the WWW Redirection option in DNS2Go to allow you to redirect a WWW request to your domain (www.domain.com) to another site (www.myspace.com). This allows you to easily remember your Myspace page, or any other personal site online rather than having to remember the possibly confusing URL to that site. Plus it makes the URL a little unique and personal.
2) Internet Radio - I'm not an Internet Radio broadcaster, and have never looked into it. However I have seen some Internet Radio links online that are just an IP. Well with a Dynamic DNS service, you can give out an actual domain name rather than an IP. Looking more professional to anyone listening.
One thing about having a domain name rather than a simple IP is Search Engines. When dealing with search engine optimization, the domain name is key. Having the right domain name allows your site to be crawled more effectively by the Search Engine spiders.
